One of the great attractions in Alva, Florida is The Eden Winery. The Eden Winery has been in the Alva, Florida area for 30 years making fine wines. It that time they have seen there share of hard times, both economically and with a crop disease known as Pierces. The Kiser family whom owns the winery, found out through research how to get past these short comings in the Alva, Florida Wine Industry to emerge a leader.
The result of their effort and the effort of The University of Florida produced a hybrid grape that could withstand the Pierces disease. The research started back in the early 1900’s but didn’t have a breakthrough until the 1950’s. Improvements continued to be made through the 1970’s, then in 1985 the grape was ready for production. With that new grape, Eden Vineyards became the southernmost federally licensed, bonded winery and vineyards in the United States.
Today Eden is still growing as a company in Alva, Florida with several hundred retailers selling their wines. This is truly a historic attraction not to miss.
