Everglades City rests on one end of the Wilderness Waterway, the famous Everglades backcountry route linking Everglades City to Flamingo, making it an ideal place to base your trips into Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. This beautiful, natural area is choc full of wildlife: alligators, crocodiles, deer, raccoons and many other wild animals. There is also a small airport where you can hire a float plane for a tour of the 10,000 Islands before you even put a paddle to water in your canoe or kayak. Fishing, bicycling and exploring are also very rewarding opportunities to view the history of the Everglades.

The area around Chokoloskee Bay and Everglades City was occupied for thousands Everglades City Attractionsof years by Native Americans of the Glades culture, who were absorbed by the Calusa shortly before the arrival of Europeans, but by 1821, when Florida was transferred from Spain to the United States, the area was uninhabited. In the early 1920's, farming was the primary occupation of people living in the area and included sugarcane, bananas, and vegetables. Within a few years the sleepy community grew into a bustling industrial-based company town.

This fishing village and mecca for sports fishermen is only half an hour from Naples and Marco Island and less than 1½ hours from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers.
