Collecting antiques is a great hobby. Some people know exactly what there looking for and some do not. Where do the people who have difficulty looking for the right historic artifact turn? They turn to private antique brokers.
How do you find an antique dealer?
Choosing an antique broker depends on what you’re collecting and how much you are willing to pay. A universal broker of antiques is more complex to find than one who specializes in one particular expertise.
When seeking a dealer, make sure you ask a lot of questions. The last word you want to hear out of a broker’s mouth is “I’ll have to look that up.”
Brokers want to make money. The key to finding the right agent is not to find an agent that is greedy or bias. Do your research. Asking them for references is not insulting there intelligence or offending in any way. Follow up customer service is very important as well.
The bigger the company is the more resources and services they have to find specific items. How do you get around having to hire an expensive company? It is simple; Hire an agent that has worked for a large company such as Sotheby’s.
In the end, Antique brokers are people too and if you feel your broker is more of a salesman than a broker then he or she probably is and you should move on.
