A Brief History of Fort Myers Beach
As many of you know Fort Myers Beach is the island of Estero, once a rich grassy Sabana when the ocean was much lower than it is today. At one time, it was sought after by explorers who wanted a safe haven for shipwreck survivors and Jesuit people. Explorers wanted to take advantage of its rich, food-producing estuaries. However, Carlos (spanish name given to him) the once leader of the oldest city in America and ruler a now tourist hotspot called Mound Key, clashed with the Spanish Conquistador Pedro Menendez de Aviles whom was unable establish a solid grounding for the spanish people.
Eventually the island, which now has still has an Archaeological sites in and around the Mound Key, was conquered by the spanish and expoited by treasure hunters. However, the high shell mounds still stand as monuments to the once-mighty Calusa people.
