Pine Island - Only 15 minutes from Cape Coral, Pine Island is an out-of-the-way destination, although the bridge to Matlacha pronounced Mat-la-SHAY has a long history among fisherman. Matlacha is at the gateway to Pine Island, the Pine Island Road crosses Little Pine Island and stops at Pine Island Center, where it intersects with Stringfellow Road. AT the southern tip of the island is St. James City, at the northern tip is Bokeelia, and set in between them are Pineland, a few other communities and swaths of agricultural land where palm trees, tropical fruit and other plants grow. Roadside stands sell fresh fruits and vegetables to passersby and the island agriculture gave rise to Mango Mania, a festival that take space every summer with live music and every mango manifestation imaginable.
Pine Island is secluded and relatively untouched by the forces of tourism that has shaped its sister islands. That’s partly because Pine Island fringed by natural mangrove forests, has no beaches. Its colorful community steeped in fishing lore, sweetened by a tropical and exotic fruit industry and embellished by a strong artistic presence, defines the island.
